Scent Detection

Scent Detection is a sport where dogs are trained to locate specific scents (essential oils) and communicate with the handler that the scent source has been located. Dog and handler teams are taught to conduct searches in indoor areas, outdoor areas and vehicles. The sport provides a mentally stimulating activity for dogs, engages their natural instincts and problem-solving skills. It also develops a strong bond between the handler and the dog through teamwork and communication

Offering Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3.
Level 1 and Level 2 provide the foundation requirements for the sport and prepare the dog and handler team to move beyond the basics to more complex, realistic search challenges in different environments.

Level 3 builds handler observation skills, refines scent discrimination and increases a dog’s confidence and independence. Dogs must be imprinted on SDDA (wintergreen, pine & thyme) and CKC (wintergreen, anise, and clove) scents. Dog and handler teams must have experience with container, interior, and exterior searches, including intentional distractors. Teams must also have completed Levels 1 & 2, or equivalent.
